River Oaks Campus

Westwood's River Oaks college is located in Calumet City in Cook County, IL. Calumet City has a rich history, with its first inhabitants-a group of nomads who migrated across the Bering Strait from Asia-dating back to 1892. Calumet City has a population of approximately 40,000, including residents of English, Sub-Saharan African, German, Italian, Irish and Polish cultural heritages. Calumet City is the economic hub of Chicago's south suburbs, boasting numerous opportunities within the industrial, technological and commercial industries.

Whenever students attending River Oaks college need a pick-me-up, they can simply glance upward to view Calumet City's famous Smiley Towers. Painted in 1973, the smiley faces were the first instance of water towers being used as billboards. The Smiley Towers have been used in numerous films, most notably Natural Born Killers, and music videos, such as a Nine Inch Nails video and the Black Crowes "Hard to Handle" video. The Westwood River Oaks college is also close to a major shopping mall in south Calumet City and a state-of-the-art library.

Cook County is home to an expansive Forest Preserve District with more than 100 miles of bicycle paths, 200 miles of multi-purpose trails, 110 picnic grove areas and numerous butterfly gardens where visitors can view over 100 species of butterflies. Horseback riding is an especially popular way for Westwood's River Oaks college students to enjoy the great outdoors-you can bring your own horse or embark on a guided tour from one of eight different stables. The Forest Preserve District also includes a multitude of fishing, boating and swimming sites for students of the River Oaks college to enjoy.

Many River Oaks college students take up cross-country skiing, since the Forest Preserve District of Cook County makes an ideal environment. For those who are new to the sport, Camp Sagawau offers lessons, tours and equipment rentals. The winter months also provide several ice skating and snowmobiling opportunities.

The Forest Preserve's picnic groves are the ideal location in which to unwind or get together with friends and family for a joyous summer outing against the backdrop of seemingly endless greenery. Some 110 picnic groves are scattered all over Cook County, so River Oaks college students have their selection of convenient locations.

The River Oaks college campus activities and amenities are equally appealing. The school encompasses an enormous 50,000 square feet with 31 laboratories and classrooms. There are ten PC labs and four MAC labs, two medical assisting labs, private rooms for tutoring or group projects and fully-equipped student commons areas. Westwood's River Oaks college also has an honor society, numerous campus-run clubs and organizations, periodic job fairs and frequent guest speakers.
